Carbon Management: How to Spot a Useful Scenario – Part 1

carbon management

One of the common questions asked from users of our Envago Carbon platform when it comes to carbon management has been, "What makes a good scenario to model?". In response, we have curated a series of valuable insights that we are excited to share.

A scenario is a look into the future, usually by a company or organisation, based on reasoning and justifications, and used for strategic planning and decision making. It is more than just a forecast or a trend extrapolation – it is a deliberate effort to widen the lens on the future, rule in and rule out potential events, account for probabilities and players, and provide a focal point for solid management.

To paraphrase Pierre Wack, "we may not be able to see the rapids – hearing them is enough for us to start paddling.”

Good, well-crafted scenarios typically have several essential traits:

  1. Future-Focused: These scenarios are not merely about reimagining present-day decisions but are instead geared towards exploring potential futures and their implications.

  2. Contextual Relevance: They consider external factors beyond our control, grounding the scenarios in a broader, realistic context.

  3. Plausibility: Scenarios must be realistic to serve as useful guides, even if they explore uncertain or challenging possibilities.

  4. Central Narrative: A strong, cohesive narrative that ties the scenario together.

  5. Distinct but Related: Scenarios are often grouped and clustered into multiple related scenarios. While each scenario within the group shares a common thread, each one remains distinct, with a unique purpose for itself.

If your scenario looks into the future, accounts for external factors beyond your control, remains plausible, weaves a compelling narrative, and models multiple different aspects, you’ are likely on the right track.
