Greenbase provides streamlined, standardised GHG and Energy Reporting Solutions
Scope 1 and 2 GHG Emissions
For over 15 years, companies in Australia have been required to report Energy and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, and as more international agreements get signed and the consensus builds, more companies are also taking a proactive stance when it comes to reporting GHG emissions voluntarily. Regardless of what framework is used for reporting, GHG emissions fall under three common categories or Scopes, and each framework has different requirements when reporting each Scope.
GHG emissions reporting refers to the compilation and analysis of data related to Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
Scope 1 and 2 emissions reporting looks at the overall emissions produced and used in the facility’s operational activities. Companies are required to report their Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions if their jurisdiction has a mandatory programme in place and they meet or exceed the threshold required for reporting. For companies that do not meet these requirements, they may still report voluntarily through one of many voluntary GHG certification programmes and frameworks.
When reporting, we employ the COUNT principle*, where one set of data goes in, and multiple reports come out, allowing us to provide accurate and timely greenhouse gas reporting. This is particularly helpful when reporting greenhouse emissions and energy usage.
Once submitted, these reports are then aggregated by the government to report to international bodies on our progress towards meeting our international Greenhouse gas emissions reduction obligations.
* Count Once Use Numerous Times
Scope 3 GHG Emissions
Scope 3 emissions reporting covers indirect GHG emissions, including a much wider range of sources and activities than Scope 1 or 2. This additional complexity can place significant reporting pressure on companies. We aim to reduce this pressure by categorising activities across the supply chain, utilising a standard approach to data collection and calculation procedures, and providing scope for addressing any gaps that may be identified throughout the journey. The result is a consistent start-to-finish process for completing a Scope 3 report.
The process of calculating Scope 3 emissions is complex, but with Greenbase’s expert knowledge and proprietary software platform Envago, calculating Scope 3 emissions can be done practically, efficiently, and with a high degree of transparency. Scope 3 reports can be used to highlight and target emission reduction activities that already exist in a company’s value chain, strategic planning and development of its own reductions and targets, as well as increasing stakeholder engagement.
The scope 3 reporting services we provide include:
Assessing materiality and selecting Greenhouse Gas Protocol categories to report against
Identifying activities in the company’s value chain that contribute significantly to its GHG emissions footprint
Assistance in the data collection process
Assistance in the process of surveying for supplier-specific emissions factors
Determining and sourcing appropriate emissions factors where supplier-specific emissions factors cannot be provided
Calculating Scope 3 emissions
Producing a Scope 3 emissions summary report
The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Scheme
The NGER Scheme is a mandatory Commonwealth of Australia Initiative introduced in 2007 to provide data and accounting in relation to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption and production. The Scheme’s legislated objectives are:
to inform policymakers and the Australian public,
to meet Australia’s international reporting obligations, and
to provide a single national reporting framework for energy and emissions reporting. The scheme is administered by the Commonwealth of Australia Clean Energy Regulator (CER).
Greenbase can assist you and support your organisation with the NGER obligations:
NGER annual reporting
NGER threshold assessment
NGER compliance review
Documentation – Basis of Preparation (BoP)
Documentation – Organisational Reporting Boundaries (ORB)
Contractor guideline review
Emissions graphs/diagrams
GHG Assessment and Management Planning
Identifying organisational boundaries, facilities and activities
Determining data sources, collection processes, calculation methodologies and emission factors
Estimating baseline emissions by sources (carbon footprint)
Benchmarking
Identifying key reduction opportunities,
Supporting project approval processes,
GHG emission estimates to support the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process required by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) under Part IV of the EP Act, and
Options to track Scope 1 and 2 regularly, quarterly, or monthly are available.
Additionally, we work with clients to calculate their Scope 3 emissions and can contribute to the development of their Decarbonisation Action Plans.
